A letter from Moira, one of our volunteers.

(Our meeting place, late March 2010: The steps of our beloved Zonnebloem Centre: the coolest, shadiest place in Cape Town!)
Moira is a qualified remedial teacher, with many years of experience working in schools in England. She spent a month with us at The Zonnebloem Centre: in addition, she worked with Help To Read at a little school in town, near Parliament during her time in Cape Town. She produced a very constructive and helpful document at the end of her time with us; a comparison of the work that we and Help to Read do. It is very helpful in our planning and strategy going forward, and some of her observations are something we are already actioning. In particular, the point that the 'heavyweight training' could be overwhelming for a first time volunteer. We have decided to encourage all new volunteers to start with our two weekly 'light-weight training' as an entry level starting point, and then to graduate onto Elizabeth's more thorough training at a later stage, once they have found their feet.Thank you Moira for this valuable insight.
In conclusion, Moira says
'...both organisations are making an enormously valuable contribution towards raising literacy levels in schools in Cape Town. Thank you both so much for allowing me to join you. I hope any comments I have made will be seen as an attempt to be constructive and provide some feedback from what has been a truly wonderful experience.'
