Mrs Jardine the new principal of Lourier has made some lovely changes at Lourier, school, including the newly located literacy centre, Little Stars. The centre is now triple the size, with a fresh primrose interior. Themba, Carrie and Bea visited last week, and delighted in the energy and innovation taking place there. Bea mentioned to me that the atmosphere at the school was one of joy, fun and engagement: a great place to learn.

One of our overseas volunteers from California sent us a lovely testimonial the other day, that I wanted to share. We are so honoured to be able to work with such special people.
'Working at the Shine Centre branch at Prestwich Primary School was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The children were such a pleasure to work with—they are so happy when they are at school, always smiling and laughing, and very enthusiastic about learning. I especially remember working with a child who was struggling with the letters of the alphabet. After only a few sessions, he was able to spell basic three-letter words. The expression on his face after he realized that he could identify and write letters, and even sound out and spell basic words, was priceless. My experiences with these children reinforced to me the importance of the work the Shine Centre does on a daily basis. My only regret was that I wasn’t able to spend a longer period of time in Cape Town, but I know I’ll be back soon.'
We look forward to welcoming you back, Tania!
Bea visited Westlake earlier this week, and came back with a glowing report. The day she was visiting, a team of educational delegates from the Eastern Cape were visiting to watch 'best practice.' It is satisfying to think that every visitor takes something away with them, however small. We just want our simple and efficient methods to spread countrywide!
A great report on Book Buddies landed in my in-box from Themba, who is heading up the community work for Shine. I thought I should share an extract....'After a few attempts, thwarted by service
delivery disruptions, Maurita and I finally managed to visit the Zenzeleni
Waldorf School in Khayelitsha to see the Book Buddies programme that we
launched at the school in June of this year. Book Buddies is a programme that
is designed to pair students of different grades to read together using the method of Paired and Shared Reading. The older children read to the younger
children, with the idea of improving the literacy of the children at the
school, and instilling the love of books throughout the school!

Zenzeleni is a relatively small school that provides a very different approach

expand into other schools. We noticed that the children ‘flew’ through the

books because we want to challenge them with their reading. We plan to learn from this pilot project and improve it if needed.

We received a lovely email from Joan in Durban today, who has started to use the Shine games at her centre. I thought I would post an extract: 'Thank you for all the amazing games...I have been meaning to take photo's of the volunteers and kids with the new games but keep getting distracted because we are all having so much fun! Most volunteers have been a little reluctant to start at Game one. There is a wonderful attitude of "My child is FAR too clever for this!" I think that really shows what wonderful relationships have been built between our learning partners. I have, however insisted they do start at the beginning and work through them all even though 'their' child is exceptional!

What amazes me is the amount of thought that has gone into these games. Most of the children were able to say the sound that a particular letter makes and yet still needed Game two to enforce the beginning sounds.... Every game seems to give them more than what I could hope. What a privilege to have access to such amazing resources and to be able to invest them in these kids. Thanks again!

I received a thorough report from Themba last week about the latest parent workshop. Themba joined us recently to work on the Outreach part of our programme. He is busy helping us set up book clubs and parent workshops in the communities. This is just a short extract from his latest feedback:

'Out of 100 parents who confirmed their
attendance, only 29 parents arrived on the day. This was very disappointing to
all of us, yet we did not let this get in the way of us facilitating a great
workshop. The small turnout meant that we could have an intimate interaction
with the parents and take part in discussions with them. I was able to
communicate to them just how crucial it is to get to know the teacher of their
child and not to wait until the child is under-performing at school before
making contact.

Many of the parents we work with and meet
at these workshops have themselves not had a good education. No one read to
them as children and supported them beyond sending them to school. They all
want to see their children do well and have access to opportunities they
themselves have never had. Our workshops enable us to engage with them without
judgment and help them to see opportunities that lie ahead.

We reflected (later) about how lucky we
are to do the work that we do, and to have had the opportunity to be part of
the conversation. And seeing
parents take ownership of the workshop was beyond anything we could have asked
for!' Themba Tshabalala

Debbie Van As, (one of our Zonnebloem volunteers) and her husband Peter recently donated 40 wonderful china cups that we plan to use at our parent and volunteer workshops. This was a true gift for us: our old cups were looking decidedly scruffy, and these came at just the right time. We are constantly overwhelmed by the generosity of our volunteers and their families.Shinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06329868837435610843noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2386346198176522924.post-79572683671801742972012-08-10T15:00:00.000+02:002012-08-17T11:08:17.103+02:00Our latest Part one 'Shine in a Box' Training

Eight people joined us yesterday for our Shine in a Box training. This makes a total of close to 100 people we have trained in our Shine methods since we started the course two years ago. We always go away very energised from these gatherings: there is always so much enthusiasm and energy bounding around. We hope that out of small seedlings, many Shine chapters will grow! Two of the attendees, Fikile and Penny Tshabulala, flew down from Gauteng, and we were able to introduce them to Margi Bashall, who has started several Shine Chapters in and around Jo Burg. Fikile gave us wonderful feedback just before we parted ways:

'I am excited about the wealth of
information gained, I this feels like the tip of the iceberg....a hurdle may be funding, but I am excited to start something!'

We always like the feedback, as it helps us improve on our presentation and delivery for future workshops. 'Lelethu (grade 3 girls' school) arrived at Shine today with a box covered in wrapping paper with a note taped to the front of it, a present for her learning partner, Denise King.
The note says: " I love you. You are the star. You the best in the west. Even you die, I will remember you. You are the best teacher".
Trudy reported that they were very responsive and commented on the impact that the programme makes, and highlighted the improvements they see with children who attend Shine. It is exciting for us to be able to showcase the programme to the teachers, and for them to see the value : this is team work at its best.

We are full of admiration for the Praesa team who are busy
promoting their Nal'ibali Reading Clubs. Nal'ibali means 'Here's the Story' in
Xhosa, so: Nal'ibali!

The Nal'ibali project is are being sponsored by The Douglas Murray
Trust and backed by Avusa, who are publishing supplements in the Times
newspaper every Wednesday during term-time. You will start to see these
supplements filtering into our Shine Centres over the coming months: they are
printed in English and Xhosa in the Western Cape, and we are delighted to be
able to use these books in a multiple of ways: as readers to take home,
as books to go home in parent packs, and eventually to be a strong feature in
our community initiatives that we are busy working on.

Here is a little bit about the Nal'ibali reading clubs so
when you see the supplements, you are familiar with the organisation and their
aims:

'All over South Africa people are starting reading clubs
to get young people reading! Some of these clubs have been running for a number
of years while others are just starting – but what is common to all of them is
that they have caught the story-bug and they don’t want to let it go!

Why do people start reading clubs? These people know how
important telling stories, reading and writing are in our lives. They want to
provide regular opportunities for children to enjoy listening to stories,
reading and writing. They know that as children experience stories and books,
they will grow to love them and become better at reading and writing.

So, what is a reading club? It’s a relaxed environment
that is more like home than school. Nobody is forced to come – it’s something
you choose to do.It’s a place where people who love stories and books meet
regularly to read, tell stories and talk about what they are reading with
children of all ages. Sometimes they also do other fun activities related to
stories and books. And often there’s time for club members to write too…
because reading and writing go together. All of these things can happen in any
language – in fact, most of the clubs tell and read stories in at least two
languages!'

Many congratulations to the Nal'ibali team, and we are
proud to promote the work they are doing.

Andrew and Brevan from Mullers are casting their wonderful magic this week at our centres, and will continue their work over the next month or so. Over 100 children were assessed this week, and approximately 150 more children will be tested at all our schools in the next two weeks. Mullers have committed to screen every grade one child, any new child up to grade three, plus see the children who have already been treated by Mullers in previous years. In addition, Nikki from SDM Eyewear has very generously donated 50 pairs of frames to add to the alchemy. The next stage for Mullers once all the testing has been completed will be the diagnosis and follow-up with glasses if needed. We want to thank Mullers and SDM for their collaboration and for giving their time, expertise and product so willingly. We salute them for being part of the vision (if you will excuse the pun) that allows our children the opportunity to become better readers.

Karen from Zonnebloem sent us a great little narrative yesterday which I wanted to share:

'Inga, Avuyile and Litha Booi were part of our grade one programme in 2010 - they came with some other boys who were extremely weak in the 4th term for a specialy designed programme (designed by Sally James)
When these three boys repeated Grade one they continued coming to Shine once a week for the whole of 2011. At the end of the year they were assessed along with all the grade ones, and their scores were so high they (didn't have) to come back to Shine in grade two.

Each of them read a blue sticker book to me - their reading is so good (especially Avuyile and Litha. Inga was a bit weaker and may come back to Shine in grade 3).

They insisted on taking a take-home-book for the night and on getting a praise card as well.'
It is always so good to hear such success stories. What always strikes me is the willingness and eagerness of the children to be part of Shine, and that our little traditions, such as the praise notes and the special take-home-books, are so treasured.
We recently asked a friend of Shine, Jaco Van Straten, to design a Shine Box for us. We wanted a piece of furniture that could be sent to schools and churches, which housed all our material, that was safe and secure. We plan to use these for the organisations who receive our Book Buddy training and for the Shine Book Clubs. We are very pleased with the results, and we hope that this will lead to more children being exposed to the joy of reading.

We understand the importance of ensuring that children see books, storytime and learning to read as a fun activity, and one that can transport them to places they want to go, rather than just something that takes place at school, and the Shine Box is a wonderful vehicle for this. Karen and the Zonnebloem centre flew the SA flag proudly on Thursday. The school celebrated by singing "Happy Birthday' to Madiba at 8.00am in the morning, along with the rest of the country. I wonder how many other schools added the fun 'How old are you now?' verse? The boys' school did, very heartily.... 94 today!Shinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06329868837435610843noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2386346198176522924.post-81008291203546993062012-07-19T07:30:00.000+02:002012-07-19T07:30:00.510+02:00The office bursts at the seams some days!

She had completely pre-empted me, and had prepared a lovely little narrative for us:
'I have had the most wonderful term. It has been such a pleasure to help at Zonnebloem. There is little to beat the wide and ready smiles that greet us as the children are brought up from their classrooms; or the rapt concentration on the pages of a book; or the wild enthusiasm for the new games, which have been such an overwhelming success with both learners and partners! I will miss my weekly rays of sunshine, both the literal ones, and those from the children, as I head off for a while, but am already looking forward to being back in the Spring. Thought it may be nice for you to see these photos! Carrie xxxx'

Carrie, we are privileged to have such dedication within our volunteer team, and we wish you well as you return to England for a while...and we look forward to your speedy return.
